Empowering workers by harnessing Information Collection Technologies for collective action

Background

I am a graduate of McGill's Industrial Relations program with a keen interest in technology and the future of work. As the world becomes more globalized, firms are taking full advantage of technological innovation, and are further able to exploit workers. I am curious how labour can also harness the power of technology, notably information communications technologies (ICTs), to take the power back. My project centers around this question: can ICTs be used by workers to connect with one another and engage in collective action? More specifically, with the rise of multi-national corporations, can workers around the world connect with one another and organize on a multi-national scale as well? I brought this idea to B21 because of their emphasis on intellectual sharing and their encouragement to try and work through inter-disciplinary problems. Work affects us all, and can be a livelihood, but also a passion. I am excited to exchange information with others on how they envision the future of work, and the future of collective action.
