+ Increasing fellowships to
scholars
scholars
Donations enable Building 21 to increase our cohort size and the number of BLUE programs offered yearly.
This benefits scholars who develop original research through Building 21's 4-month Beautiful, Limitless, Unconventional Exploration™ (BLUE) programs, such as Kat Kavanagh who founded the NGO Water Rangers that uses citizen science monitors over 5,000 water bodies in Canada; Mathilde Papillon who developed a new subfield of topological machine learning by bridging her physics expertise and dance background; and Su Yu Ding who recalculated the cosmological constant to a tenth degree more precise than the scientific convention.
Your support provides them with the resources and opportunities they need to transform their boldest visions into meaningful, real-world impact.

The Radical Futures (2019 - 2024) series created by scholar Damien Arteca and executed by the B21 team brought leading thinkers and visionaries to Building 21 such as David Krakauer (Sante Fe Institute), Refik Anadol (RAS LAB), Francesca Panetta (MIT Center for Advanced Virtuality), Michael Lapsley (Institute for Healing of Memories), Michael Levin (Tufts University) for over 5 years of thematic talks.
Other projects include The Future of Cities (2022 - Current) program, led by B21 alumnus and staff Nakiya Noorbhai, which connects scholars with city stakeholders to reimagine cities that maintain the good, and Eduhack Nigeria (2022) which developed an experimental educational hackathon for lead educators in Nigeria.
Through your support, scholars gain access to fresh perspectives, valuable expertise, and opportunities to work alongside those who are driving the conversations and initiatives that matter most.

your research mission
In 2023, the Tanenbaum Open Science Institute funded five positions under Building 21's BLUE program to pursue research with an Open Science mission. The B21 team led the recruitment, programming, and supervision for the 4-month research program.
Scholar's projects ranged from building open access labs (PhD Candidate, School of Communication Sciences and Disorders), creating curriculum for indigenous communities (PhD Candidate, Department of Integrated Studies in Education), and investigating information ecosystems for open science practices (PhD Candidate, School of Information Studies).
By supporting scholars whose work aligns with your mission, you help provide them with the resources they need to bring their ideas to life. In return, your organization gains a fresh perspective and innovative solutions that reflect the passions and creativity of the next generation.

+ Mentor scholars as an
industry partner
industry partner
In 2025, global ocean clean up company, 4ocean, and cancer research company, Farcast Biosciences, partnered with Building 21 to find new paradigms for reimagining solutions for the ocean plastic crisis and cancer treatment respectively.
B21's team worked alongside each company to design subprograms attached to B21's 4-month BLUE Residency with the industry's most pressing problems as the research focus. Scholars under these subprograms received supplemental mentorship from 4ocean and Farcast Biosciences executives while developing their projects within the BLUE program infrastructure.
If you’re looking for new ways to approach challenges, engaging with our scholars through mentorship can be incredibly valuable. By working alongside these scholars on real-world projects, you can share your expertise while gaining insights into new approaches and solutions that challenge conventional thinking.
